10 facts you never knew about Jorja Smith

Brit Award winning Jorja Smith has had a fantastic year following the release of her debut album ‘Lost & Found’ in June 2018. Aside from collaborating with the likes of Drake and Stormzy, supporting Bruno Mars on the US leg of his tour and making waves in the fashion industry, Jorja has developed a unique sound which has received much critical acclaim. We couldn’t be more excited to bring her to Boardmasters 2019! Here are 10 facts about Jorja that will make you love her even more than you already do! 


1. How she met Drake for the first time

Jorja has revealed that the first time she met the Toronto rapper (who she collaborated with on 2016 track ‘Get It Together’), she was in The Co-op buying Wine Gums and tampons!

2. She knows how to make a good coffee

Jorja used to be a part-time barista at Starbucks and would record snippets of songs on her phone during her lunch breaks.

3. She cites Amy Winehouse, Damian Marley and Lauryn Hill as her main influences

“All of these artists were so honest, raw, real and you could believe every word they were singing/rapping about. I think I do that too.”

4. It was this YouTube video that first got her noticed

After covering Alex Clare’s ‘Too Close’ someone from the music industry got in contact and wanted to meet her.

5. She was the first independent artist to even be nominated (let alone win) the Brits Critics Choice Award!

She continues to operate independently (through choice). 

6. Her home setup is a beat-up old 70s hi-fi with knackered speakers

She likes listening to a record from start to finish without being able to skip tracks.

9. She started gigging at 15

Starting small, Jorja performed a few shows in small venues around her native Walsall. Look how far she's come...

Not only has Smith won the Brits Critics Choice Award, she has also been Mercury Prize nominated, MOBO nominated and has recently been nominated for a Grammy!
