Boardmasters x SAS Big Autumn Beach Clean - Round Up!

On Saturday 27th October, nearly 200 of you joined us for Beach Cleans on two of our favourite beaches – Fistral & Watergate Bay - as part of Surfers Against Sewage's record breaking 'Big Autumn Beach & River Clean' campaign. Together, we removed 110 bags of waste that included avoidable plastics, netting, nurdles, fishing ropes, glass bottles, cans, recyclables and even a mop bucket! Take a look at a round up below...

We kicked the cleans off at Watergate in the morning and the weather was pretty temperamental to say the least (rain, sunshine and even hail!) but that didn't stop nearly one hundred of you heading out over the course of the morning to help volunteer. We sieved for microplastics, pulled out fishing rope and even discovered traffic cones buried deep underneath rocks! Between us, we collected 200 kilos of waste and separated it all out up at WAX Watergate Bay, where two huge bags of fishing rope were taken away by one volunteer for use in her A-Level art instillation, highlighting the issues surrounding global coastlines. We warmed up with pizza and hot chocolates before running a treasure hunt giveaway that included VIP tickets and Boardmasters merchandise!

In the afternoon we headed along to Fistral alongside Hugo from Surfers Against Sewage and Colette from Plastic Free Newquay, where we welcomed many new and familiar faces. With the Night Surf competition getting underway as our backdrop as we ventured across a very windy beach, there was plenty of waste to be found into the dunes including an abundance of glass and plastic bottles. Volunteers sieved for nurdles with a handmade sieve (borrowed from the awesome folks at WAX Watergate Bay) and one family even came back with a mop bucket! We then headed into Fistral Beach Bar for more hot chocolates and a Soul Arch beer or two - where we got stuck in once again to separate the waste into recyclables and non recyclables - ready for disposal.

As well as the beach cleans, we were thrilled to present Surfers Against Sewage with a donation from The Boardmasters Foundation for £20,000, surpassing £120,000 of donations from the festival to the organisation over the years. Hugo Tagholm, CEO of Surfers Against Sewage joined us at Fistral and stated - “SAS is thrilled to be the long-standing charity partner of the Boardmasters Festival and engage festival-goers with our environmental campaigns to protect waves, oceans and beaches for everyone. We saw some amazing results yet again in 2018, with record levels of engagement with our Plastic Free Coastlines campaign. We’re looking forward to even more plastic free activations on site in 2019 and are exceedingly grateful for today’s £20,000 donation from the Boardmasters Foundation.

For almost twenty years we’ve worked closely with Surfers Against Sewage to implement sustainable & environmental initiatives at Boardmasters that with your help, grow greater year on year. We're proud to unveil our key goals and plans for 2019 and beyond, in areas we believe we can make positive impact and change. Take a look below!

We cannot thank you all enough for joining us at the Big Autum Beach Cleans and look forward to seeing you all again soon for more!
