‘No Hope Generation’ is the manifesto – musically, and spiritually – for Mura Masa’s second record, ‘R.Y.C’ (Raw Youth Collage). From its “What am I to do? I’m walking backwards through my head again” opening, it’s an album in which Alex takes the listener into the future by way of memory lane. Breathing new life into - amongst other things – New Wave, Emo, Folk and 90s Rave – the results reinvent Mura Masa's sound whilst also paying tribute to the alternative roots which shaped him when Alex first became a genuine musical outsider, growing up in the remote island of Guernsey. These are concerns, after all, which don’t regard geography. “We are seeing a new type of lexicon come through,” says Alex, “in which we know we’re all dealing with these problems, but can at least recognise them in each other.” And that is a source for something that looks like hope.
